In the Air Cooled VW world, vendors will list parts that fit a VW Type 1 or 2 and so on.
Here is a quick down and dirty explanation.
Type 1  Beetle
Type 2 Bus or Kombi
Type 3 Squareback, Fastback or Notchback
Type 4 Vanagon

There are some variances to this rule and some parts fit multiple vehicles.
An example is, the early Busses type 2 had basically the same engine as the early beetle type 1
This can be a challange if you are working with VW based dune buggy.
