Moonstone belongs to the large mineral family of feldspars. It is an opalescent stone which can range from colorless to blue, peach, green, pink, yellow, brown or gray with a silvery or bluish sheen.
The “shimmer” of a moonstone is referred to as 'adularisation', and is due to the inner structure of the stone – the layers of the interior of the stone reflect light back, and as the stone is highly laminar, the multiple layers reflect light differently, giving it a “milky” glow.
The moonstone typically exhibits a 6 on the Moh hardness scale, and so moderate care should be taken with moonstone jewelry. Moonstone is hard enough for daily use jewelry, but should not be worn for strenuous activities where it may be damaged (such as sports or yard work.)
Moonstone is the modern birthstone for June.
