In simple terms: Airsoft "HopUp" is a device that creates a "back spin" on your bb before it leaves the barrel for an extended maximum range. This "back-spin" allows the bb to "float" and spin, decreases the gravity effect and that is how Airsoft guns are able to reach great range at low velocity.
Many retailer refer "hopup" as "upgraded" which is WRONG and confusing to buyers. (You should ONLY buy Airsoft from sellers that knows Airsoft)
Nowadays, most Airsoft guns have built in hopup. Years ago, a hopup unit will cost lots and lots of money to install.
Airsoft is a replica gun designed for war game and simulation training use. This makes Hopup very important because it is the only way to obtain range at non lethal power.
Hopup does decrease muzzle velocity and accuracy (after around 30 feet).
Hopup effect is achieved by rubbing the bb slightly on the bottom side of the sphere before it leaves the barrel.
Hopup rubber on high end A.E.G. need to be replaced when worn out. (If the bbs fall out of the barrel or curves greatly.)
BB choices is very important because defored / cheap bb can damage your hopup rubber. There are three different manufacture / group of bb:
A - Manufactured by Taiwan / Japan: This manufacture supplies Excel, Matrix, AE and is the best to buy. The bbs are precise and accurate.
B - Manufactured by a secondary manufacture, slightly not as accurate.
C - Manufactured by China. You can see seems, hair, bbs not being polished very good, bb not the same size, particles of odd shape will be mixed in the bag, uneven weight.... (Do not buy these, Airsoft gun need to use precise bb to maintain its durability, accuracy and power.)
