Q: What is a Star Note?
A: A normal, modern United States bank note has a suffix letter following the serial number. A star note has a star instead of a suffix letter. The U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) inspects currency for printing errors prior to releasing notes into circulation. When notes are found that have been printed incorrectly, these misprinted, error notes are replaced with star notes. Using star notes as replacement notes is much more efficient and cost effective than having to reprint error notes.
When the BEP is ready to release notes into circulation, they band notes together (with a BEP strap) in groups of 100. On each strap it says, "If the numbers on notes in this package do not run in sequence, the substituted notes are indicated by a STAR."
Because star notes are quite rare, yet very recognizable, they are highly collectible and are prized by collectors and hobbyists.
