The first requirement is that a reborn doll always looks and feels like a real baby. This is the main appeal of this type of doll. Reborn dolls are for adults, and are not a child’s plaything. The “Reborning of dolls” began by creative people turning play dolls into real looking infants. They repainted factory dolls, and replaced staring eyes and wigged hair. The dolls were taken apart and re-weighted and redressed in real baby clothing.

A reborn doll can be considered one of a kind due to the amount of hand-work that goes into each one. Although the face/arm and leg molds are produced in the hundreds, each artist adds their own talent and so each doll is different.

Over time the success of these first artists has grown into a phenomenon. Now, instead of using play dolls, there is a whole industry of kits by a variety of artists and sculptors that are made specifically to be REBORN. These kits have no eyes or hair and are a blank slate for the artist to work their magic on.

Paints have been developed that adhere well to the vinyl surfaces and resist any fading. Each Reborn Artist has developed their own techniques for adding realism to their dolls. These are carefully guarded secrets! Reborn artists are continually improving their own tricks and adding new ones.

 Hair is now inserted 1-2 hairs at a time. Skin is textured to show pores, and even little blemishes and scratches. Eyes are glass or glass like, eye lashes are inset one at a time, and little toes and fingers are manicured to look like real baby nails! These babies even have little veins under the skin.Moisture and baby tears can be added to their eyes and mouth. The dolls are weighted and stuffed to just melt into your arms.
