Every come across this term "Giclee"? Sometimes also spelled Giglee. Pronounced like Gee-Clay. It is simply a machine made print. It comes from the French and describes the printing technique of squirting ink, similar to ink jet printing. The printing devise is large and looks like a bit like a knitting machine. The inks used are better then the average ink. Usually light fast. Giclees are printed on various media usually paper or canvas. They are High Quality Prints of ORIGINAL Art, but they are NOT the ORIGINAL ART. Often they are stretched on to stretcher bars similar to Original Paintings and therefore often confused for Original Paintings. A giclee is NOT an Original Painting. In other words, if you think it is actual oil paint that was placed on the canvas by an artist stroke by stroke with a brush, knife or fingers, you are mistaken or mislead. A giclee / giglee is always printed with a Machine. Many pieces are hand embellished and that may lead lead to confusion. It is still a PRINT that is hand embellished. In other words a few actual paint touches are placed in key places making it appear to the untrained eye or the quick observer as if one is looking at an actual painting. In the best term a Giclee could be described as a mixed media print hand embellished with paint. Not all Giclee's are hand embellished. Many sellers are forth right with this but many may give ambiguous descriptions that can lead a buyer/collector to believe they are looking at an Original Painting. This is something you must be aware off. Especially if you are buying as an investment. While a "Limited Edition Giclee Print" may have a good value, this does depend on the artist and on provenance. "Limited Editions" are basically a set number of prints and each piece should be numbered. It is also important to know if such a print has an ORIGINAL signature or if the SIGNATURE is also a print. However a Giclee is rarely more value then an ORIGINAL Painting. A "ONE OF A KIND" painting will usually be more valuable. Please be aware that often these PRINTS are listed in the ORIGINAL ART category on EBAY. At this time it has become a common practice to list such prints in the original art category. As a a seller of ONLY ORIGINAL Paintings, I therefore recommend strongly that you read the item description fully and carefully before placing bids. The title line may read ORIGINAL Painting but in the description it will often say - Giclee Painting - That is misleading. If you are unsure ask questions using "ASK SELLER A QUESTION" I hope this will help to get a clearer picture of the term Giclee and how to look for ORIGINAL ART versus Prints on EBAY or anywhere else.
