When you’re sending valuable or irreplaceable items through the mail, protect them with Registered Mail™.
Items you send with Registered Mail are placed under tight security from the point of mailing to the point of delivery, and insured up to $25,000 against loss or damage. And you can verify the date and time of delivery and the delivery attempts online. For detailed information about International Registered Mail™, see the International Mail Manual.
Registered Mail is the most secure service that the USPS offers. It incorporates a system of receipts to monitor the movement of the mail from the point of acceptance to delivery. Registered Mail provides the sender with a mailing receipt and, upon request, electronic verification that an article was delivered or that a delivery attempt was made. Customers can retrieve the delivery status in three ways: (1) over the Internet at the USPS website by entering the article number shown on the mailing receipt; (2) by telephone at 1-800-222-1811; or (3) by bulk electronic file transfer for mailers who provide an electronic manifest to the USPS. USPS maintains a record of delivery (which includes the recipient's signature) for a specified period of time. Customers may obtain a delivery record by purchasing return receipt service.
Because Registered mail is insured, if the value of the item is $1,200 or more, it actually costs less to send it Registered than Insured. For example: for a $2,000 item it would cost $19.00 for Insured and only $13.45 for Registered.
