Ever Wonder what RECYCLED SILK is?

Recycled Silk is just what it's name implies, its the new silk fabric scraps from sari manufacturing facilities, usually in India.  Where most factories just throw out or burn the fabric scraps,  silk is so beautiful that it would be a shame to waste it!  The multi-colored scraps are collected and sent to co-ops, generally in Nepal, to be spun into the most amazing, colorful yarn, which is then sold to crafters or made into goods.

Recycled silk is wonderful for many reasons

To start, it's ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS, I have never seen anything with such depth and texture as recycled silk~ it's soft and shiny and looks great with anything!  It's always a mix of colors, but the variations are endless, when you buy something made with recycled silk you know without a doubt there is nothing in the world exactly like it- so every item is completely unique.

The Best Part?

Most recycled silk is made in cottage industries, usually but extremely poor crafters, almost always women, who for one reason or another have no husbands to support them and children to care for.  Job opportunities for women in many countries are almost unheard of, and the ones available are hardly a decent means of support for a family.  Recycled silk has enabled thousands of women (at least! I know the co-op I work with supports over 100 women alone!) to create something that is valuable and can be a means of support for their families.  Many of the co-op thats produce recycled silk help with education, housing and provide much needed support and training to people who desperately need it. 

And it doesnt stop there, many more co-ops make the silk yarn into amazing fashions and accessories, the possibilities are endless, and as long as theres a demand for it, the opportunites for these crafters are limitless.  In an area where jobs are scarce this industry makes a huge impact!

So if you consider buying something from recycled silk, remember, its not just pretty, its a fantastic way to use a recycled product that improves the lives of people around the world.
