What is LARP?
LARP is an acronym for "Live Action Role Play". This role playing consists of players who dress as their characters and act out various adventures. The degree of realism in these games can vary widely. Some Larp's are more theatrical while others may engage in actual simulations. The major distinction between these two styles is the degree of actual contact between the players.
Theatrical LARP generally has no physical contact and everything is simulated under strict rules, whether it be for combat, skills or item creation. The victor of these battles is often determined by a coin toss or rock-paper-scissors.
Simulation LARP requires the player to act out his or her actions. In this type role play the gamer actually experiences the thrill of danger while engaging in combat with padded weapons.
Common LARP genres are espionage, fantasy, history, horror, military, mythology and science fiction. The game can vary in size from a few players to a few thousand, and in duration from a few hours to a week. This type of gaming gained popularity in the 70's and still continues today.
