The term Kabbalah (which comes from a Hebrew word that means "reception") usually denotes a tradition within Judaism which focuses on mystical interpretations of scripture and esoteric doctrines about the being of God. While it claims to date back to oral teachings from the biblical patriarch Abraham, specifically Kabbalistic teachings did not arise until the 10th or 11th century, in western Europe. Kabbalah has even played in part in the teachings of various Jewish sects--especially Hasidism. In modern times, many celebrities and New Agers have claimed to follow the Kabbalah, but this New Age Kabbalah bears little resemblance to classic Kabbalah.
Throughout history, there have been many important writers, mystics, and rabbis within the tradition of Kabbalah. Moses de Leon, Isaac Luria, Abraham Abulafia, and Solomon ibn Gabirol are some historically important Kabbalists. In the twentieth century, scholar Gershom Scholem has done much to advance the serious study of Kabbalah. His books Kabbalah and On the Mystical Shape of the Godhead are extremely important for any scholar of Kabbalah.
