At The Chenille Shack the most common question I am asked is, "What does YPP stand for?"
YPP means "yards per pound." The higher the number, the thinner the yarn.
A general guide is:
Under 500 ypp - Chunky/Extra Bulky Weight [recommended needle size 11 and up];
500 to 900 ypp - Bulky Weight [recommended needle size 9 - 11];
Worsted Weight - 850 to 1100 ypp [recommended needle size 7 or 9];
Sport Weight - 1200 to 1600 ypp [recommended needle size 5 or 6];
Fingering Weight - 1700 to 2300 ypp [recommended needle size 3 or 4];
Sock/Baby Weight - 2300 ypp + up [recommended needle 1 or 2].
This is a rough guide that, hopefully, will aid in your decision making. There will be variances between fiber contents and I hope this helps you out.
