If you have been invited to an affair and the invitation reads “Black Tie Optional” then you are not required to wear a tuxedo. However, chances are there will be more guests wearing tuxedos than regular suits at the event. If you do opt to wear a suit, be sure to wear a dark suit with a black tie. If your date is wearing an evening gown, then you have wear a tuxedo. Don't worry, you will not stick out like a sore thumb. It is impossible to be overdressed at these types of events.
If you have been invited to an affair and the invitation reads "Black Tie Required" then, sorry, a tuxedo is a must. However, you are not limited to wearing only a black tie as the name suggests. It simply means you must wear a black tuxedo but you can accessorize it how ever you want.
Now, if you have been invited to an affair and the invitation reads "White Tie" then jump up and holler for joy! You have just been invited to the ultimate in terms of formal events. Sorry, your regular tuxedo won't do for this one and don't even think about that boring black suit. Nothing less then a black full dress tails tuxedo with a white pique wing tip shirt, vest, and tie will do for this one.
