What do Top, Middle, and Base Notes in fragrances mean?
Perfume has layers and is described in the perfume industry as top, middle and base notes. Top notes are the most volatile and will evaporate first on your skin, middle notes are therapeutic and balancing body oils and the base notes are longest lasting oils.
TOP NOTES: Provides the first scent impression of a fragrance once it has been applied to the skin. They are usually more volatile aromas that evaporate readily. They tend to be light, fresh and uplifting in nature and are generally not very expensive. Their scent usually last for between 5 and 30 minutes.
MIDDLE NOTES: Sometimes referred to as “heart notes” of fragrances, make up the body of the blend. The smells of middle notes are not always immediately evident and may take take 10-30 minutes to fully develop on the skin. They are the notes that classify the fragrance family and are normally warm and soft.
BASE NOTES: are those with the greatest heavy weight. These scent notes are normally intense and heavy. They are relaxing in nature and are also the most expensive of all oils. They last the longest and help slow down the evaporation rates of the lighter notes, giving the fragrance holding power. The most common base notes include, Sandalwood, Myrrh, Patchouli, Ylang Ylang, Musk and Vanilla.
Because all perfume reacts with each persons body chemistry differently, it’s a good idea to try it on first and then wait a couple hours before purchasing the fragrance. Apply the fragrance to pulse points, such as your wrist, inside arm at the elbow, and back of the knee. During the first two to five minutes you will be able to smell the top notes of the perfume. After 30 minutes the middle notes of the scent. After two hours the base notes and the reaction with your body chemistry will give you the smell of the fragrance on you.
