Snowshoe sizing is most often determined by the weight of the user! Remember to add a few pounds for clothing, backpacks you might carry, and so on.
Although other factors may affect the size selection (density of snow in your area, the ability to strap your snowshoes to backpacks, etc.) we offer the following simple 'Ben's Rules' to create the optimal level of snowshoe flotation and best snowshoeing experience:
If your weight is from 90 - 135 lbs: Consider the 21 inch models.
If your weight is from 125 - 165 lbs: Consider the 25 inch models
If your weight is from 150 - 225 lbs: Consider the 30 inch models
If your weight is over 200 lbs: Consider the 36 inch models.
We recognize that many of the manufacturers promote broader ranges of carrying capacity for their snowshoe models. And, you can, in fact, put a 250 pound person on a pair of 30 inch snowshoes! But, the performance and flotation will not be as good as if they were on a pair of 36 inch snowshoes. The manufacturers ratings are typically associated with using their models on packed trails...not off-trail!
Our focus is to provide you with gear that will perform well...no matter where you will use it. So, if you think part of your snowshoeing will take you off the trails...select with confidence using Ben's Rules and enjoy your snowshoeing experience!
