Primitives....Where do I start? I have a hard time remembering when I didn't love primitives, and the whole primitive decorating & life style. For many of us, it is a life style. For me primitives evoke a feeling of warmth and simplicity. In the hustle and bustle of our modern world, when we step through the doors into our primitive homes, we step back into time.A time where life had a slower pace, where there was no phones, TV's, Microwaves, Computers, Game Stations, Dance Class, Little League Practice, etc....
Now don't get me wrong. I love my gas stove & electric refrigerator. Lets face it. I may love the idea of the simplicity of life, those who lived before us had, but I also enjoy my modern conveniences. Before the Industrial Revolution 90% of America was agrarian. Thats 90 % who worked their tails off from the time they got up until they fell into their straw mattress beds from exhaustion, because they worked hard all day just to feed themselves. There was no convenient store down on the corner to grab a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk. If you didn't make and bake the bread that morning then you went without. Somehow I don't think they needed sleep aids to help them fall to sleep. LOL!!!!
A primitive home with it's worn furniture and accessories has a feeling of simplicity, warmth and comfort. It invites you in,wraps you in its warmth, and makes you want to never leave. Nothing beats the feeling of a fire burning in the fireplace, bread baking in the oven, as the snow falls outside your windows. Tis heavenly!
The primitive style is a choice. I truely love decorating with primitives. It has such warmth, it touches your soul. How does one go about decorating with primitives? Buy what you love, buy that piece that brings a feeling of warmth & comfort, but remember that it isn't all those big pieces that will give you a truely primitive style. It is the little needfuls that will pull it all together. The pantry boxes, baskets, crocks, textiles & linens, peg racks with drieds or clothes hanging from them. You want to bring it all together with different textures. A large primitive cupboard may look good in your dinning area, but that same piece will look truely primitive and awesome with the needfuls you choose to display on or around it. Soften the hardlines of wood with a hand-stitched textile, bring some warmth with primitive hanging candles,or a small reproduction lamp. Stack old quilts on top or a bowl of ragballs.
Anyone can bring primitives into their home. Some like a few pieces here and there, while others want the whole 9 yards. No matter your decorating style, primitive pieces will fit in and bring a sense of warmth and simplicity into your home. An old quilt thrown over the back of a couch, a primitive doll sitting on a chair or bench, a primitive sign hanging on a wall, a tower of stacking boxes, wooden bowl filled with candles, rosehips, or primitive ornies can all add charm to any home.
Primitive decorating isn't difficult to do, and many items that may be destined for the trash heap can be recycled, given a primitive make-over and become a favored treasure. There are a lot of talented sellers on ebay where one can find just about anything primitive they may be looking for.
