The kind of water to use with your CPAP or BiPap humidification unit is an important part of care for your medical equipment and most importantly, your health. It is a good idea to use distilled water and not tap water for humidification purposes, whether you have a passover or heated humidifier with your CPAP or BiPap unit. Distilled water is water that has been put through the process of distillation. The end result is water that is free of mineral deposits. Tap water can be hard or soft. Hard water contains calcium and magnesium ions and possibly bicarbonate and sulfate compounds, namely mineral deposits. Did you know that according to the U.S. Geological survey, over 89% of US homes have hard water? Hard water is the cause for that white, chalky residue or deposits found in and around water pipes and faucets. The deposits are the mineral content that is left behind following the evaporation of hard water. You may have found a collection of this residue in your humidifier. And, you may have noticed corrosion occurring on some parts inside the humidifier. Think about this for a second or two - this white material is ruining your expensive medical equipment and, you are breathing in this residue! Also, have you noticed any pink residue in the heated or non-heated water chamber? That may be bacteria called serratia marcescens that is growing and thriving in a warm, moist environment. Simple daily care of the humidifier should eliminate the growth and buildup of this bacteria. Care that includes washing the humidifier in warm soapy water, rinsing well and drying completely. We encourage you to change the water daily in your humidifier so it can remain free of harmful pathogens.  If that is not possible to do, always check the water level in the humidifier before turning the unit on. We encourage you to use distilled water and not tap water in your humidifier . This will keep your humidifier in tip-top shape and above all, breathing right!.  Thank you for taking time to read our guide and please feel free to contact us if you have any questions related to your CPAP or BiPap therapy.
