Wasp violets have a special shaped flower petal that resembles a wasp wing. The flowers have a shape that looks very different from other African violets. The leaves are also different in appearence. Jim Dates is the man that hybridized the majority of these violets. There are a few others that have made using his plants as one of the parents.
Years ago Jim told me the story about how he started growing these plants. He found a plant (which was later named Celery) with very strange leaves and showed it to his mother. She had a group of her friends visiting at the time. She were fascinated about the shape and wanted to use it from flower arrangements. "The leaves looked like a bustle from old fashioned dress," remarked one of the women. Dates used that plant to start his line of Wasp violet.
Wasp violet are a little more difficult to grow in perfect rosettes. The leaves are more likely to curl. They are grown like any other violet.
