The purpose of this guide is to show Caregivers how a BED PAD can assist with the care of an incontinent loved one.
Reusable and Washable bed pads are a wonderful aid if you are caring for a bedridden loved one. Another name for this type of pad is an Incontinence Pad.
Waterproof pads are great to save your furniture from "accidents" when Mom or Dad move in with you because they can no longer live on their own.
An underpad can help you survive POTTY TRAINING your toddler. Just put the pad on top of the bed sheets. The pad absorbs liquid and draws it away from the top layer keeping your child drier! Maybe you won't have to use those PULL-UPs for years and years...
Just think - washing the pad instead of changing an entire bed of sheets! The stress of being a fulltime caregiver is often unending. Getting through the potty training stage is often unnerving! If you can reduce your laundry - you have reduced your STRESS.

An underpad as used in hospitals and other medical care facilities is VERY helpful when repositioning a person in the bed. One caregiver on each side of the bed pulls up on the bed pad and easily repositions their loved one who cannot move themselves.
How are waterproof bed pads constructed? A reusable, washable pad is constructed with three layers.
- TOP LAYER: a soft fabric similar to diapers - 80/20 cotton polyester blend, 100% cotton or 100% brushed polyester. This is the fabric the person lays on and so should be comfortable to the touch.
- MIDDLE LAYER: the soaker fabric which holds the liquid and moves the liquid away from your loved one's skin. Did you know that wetness can accelerate skin deterioration? Persons who are bedridden or spend much of their time in a bed can have very fragile skin. Part of the process includes thinning of the skin. Using a bed pad with a soaker draws the liquid away from the patient. My standard pad holds up to FOUR CUPS of liquid!! My large pad (33" x 34" holds up to SIX CUPS of liquid!!!
- BOTTOM LAYER: a knit vinyl material that is waterproof and keeps the moisture in the pad (and away from your loved one AND keeps your mattress or furniture dry!) Often this vinyl fabric is made to keep the pad from slipping in the bed.
There are several standard sizes of incontinent pads - 24"x36", 34"x36" and others. Which size you choose depends first and foremost on the size of your loved one! Larger folks will feel more comfortable with a larger pad. Both sizes of pads wash and dry easily in home laundry equipment.
