Walter- A Guide to Walter & Fashion
Walter Baker, the man behind the self-named line of women's clothing, WALTER, describes his customers as uptown girls with downtown sensibilities. He's proud of his edgy willingness to mix disparate elements in his clothing--like gold embossed crocodile with old-fashioned trench coat styling. His ability to mix what he calls urban and exotic elements has made him a hit with young celebrities who don't mind standing out, like Paris Hilton.
Signature jackets, flirty tops, and feminine dresses are the mainstays of the WALTER look. In spite of the stand-out detailing, Baker insists his clothing is meant to be functional and practical as well as sexy. One of his tweed jacket, for example, is equally at home in the office or out for the evening's social activities.
Baker uses real women on the streets of London or in the bars and beaches of the south Mediterranean for inspiration, and his teenage daughters provide instant feedback on his designs. His customer demographic, however, cuts across age and geographic lines. Luxury retail outlets like Henri Bendel, Bergdof Goodman, and Nieman Marcus carry his clothes, as well as many other boutiques around the country.
Baker is also proud of his attention to quality. He says that his customers can be assured that his jeans, for example, will always be made of the finest Italian denim. He also plans to expand into shoes and handbags with a licensing program that reflects his passion for precision and craftsmanship.
