..........RESEARCHES.........WOODS OF WINDSOR......
The shop, located across the road from Windsor Castle, began as The Woods Pharmacy in 1770-three centuries ago! In those days it catered to the needs of the Royal Family and townspeople of Windsor.
The Woods Pharmacy was purchased by Roger Knowles in 1969. Mr Knowles made a remarkable discovery among the accumulated artifacts and books in the 5 story building---books containing the formulas for fragrances dating back to the early 1800's.
Mr Knowles and his wife Kathleen began selling sachets of potpourri made from these recipes in the chemist shop. The potpourri was so popular that a small shop at the rear of the building was stocked with fragrances and toiletry products exclusively. In 1974 the fragrance business was doing so well that the Knowles' took a gamble and decided to concentrate on just the perfumery business. Their products were stocked by Selfridges, Liberty's and Harrods.
In October of 2000 the Knowles' sold the business to the company managing director and the financial director. The new owners brought many new products to the Woods of Windsor line combining traditional recipes with scientific advances of the twenty-first century for a classic yet contemporary collection of perfumed products.
50 High Street, Windsor, Berkshire, SL4 1LR, England
Woods of Windsor products are now sold worldwide and offer an array or products including a complete range of bath, body, and home fragrances as well as shampoos, bath powders, soaps, deodorants, perfumes, candles. The focus is still the traditional fragrances of rose, lily of the valley, forgot me not, mimosa, jasmine and of course, lavender.
I decided to do a little research before listing a potpourri ginger jar I bought at Harrods in 1979 and discovered the interesting beginnings of these wonderful products. I hope you found this interesting as well.
Happy eBaying!
