  THE WILLOW TREE STORY

Willow Tree was introduced in January 2000 with one figurine, 15 angels, and the Nativity. The line has grown to encompass those sentiments that we most want to express. To our friends, to our family, to our children's teachers, to those near and dear, to those far and infrequent.

The original inspiration for Willow Tree still holds true today: Willow Tree is an intimate, personal line of figurative sculptures representing qualities and sentiments that help us feel close to others, heal wounds, or treasure relationships to living things. Artist Susan Lordi hand-carves each original piece with this thought in mind. Her figures continue to evolve as she identifies emotions so important for us to convey, and renders them in simple, pure gestures. These art forms beautifully express love, closeness, healing, courage, hope...all the emotions of a life well lived.
The name Willow Tree was chosen to symbolize that which is gestural and beckoning. The figures are columnar in design, like a tree, and often carry natural objects or animals as metaphors for human virtues or qualities...rosemary for remembrance, a bird for healing, flowers for beauty.

The sculptures are rendered so as to suggest elegance, simplicity, peace and serenity. Forms reveal their expressions through body gestures only...a tilt of the head, placement of the hands, a turn of the body. Emotions are left to the viewer to discern, which makes them personal and powerful.

 ABOUT The ARTIST

Susan Lordi's inspiration comes from a love of family, closeness to friends, and an appreciation of nature. Her art is intimate and personal, reflecting that which helps us treasure our relationship to people and the world around us. Besides her work in mixed media and design, she is known for her innovative fiber art that has been exhibited internationally. A monograph of her work has been published in the Portfolio Collection by Telos Art Publishing. She is also featured in the book Art Textiles of the World: USA. Susan and her family live in Kansas City.

I once had a customer in my store ask me "why don't the angels have faces painted on them?"  My answer to her was "They have the face that you want to see and that face is different for each one that looks at them."  She liked that and made the purchase.

DEMDACO continues to "RETIRE" pieces after they have been in production for a period of time.  Some of the retired pieces are very sought after.  My advice to anyone collecting is "always buy the items you love, if they increase in value, then that is great."

   HEARTWARMING STORY from and eBay customer.  (Just wanted to share her wonderful email she sent to me after receiving the Angel of FRIENDSHIP she was sending to a friend.  The Angel is holding a little puppy.)

The angel arrived yesterday!  I *have* to tell you the story about this angel.  A friend of mine, an online friend, recently had to put down her Cocker Spaniel due to a painful terminal illness.  She called me that same night.  She knew we had a Cocker and she and I  had talked about when we lost Oreo.  It was devastating to me.  She, too, was so hurt when she lost her Rosie.  I sent her the usual e-cards and a card by snail mail along with some emails back and forth but I just didn't think that helped much.  I tried to think of something special and different that no one else would think of (I hope) to send her.  Then I remembered the Willow Tree products.  I had bought one with the pup several years ago for another friend that was having some illness herself.  So I went searching on ebay for this particular Angel.  I wrote you, bought your item, received it, opened it, and did I get a surprise, too.  The pink ribbon around the box reminded me of the pink ribbon around Oreo's neck the day we went and picked her up!  I still have her ribbon in her keepsake box.  I've left the ribbon around the box to send to my friend.  In some small way, maybe Oreo was in on this special gift, too.  I can't help but think she was!
