What does graduated compression hosiery do......?
It improves venous and lymphatic blood flow. It is designed to deliver a controlled amount of pressure which is greatest at the distal end (ankle) of the garment and gradually decreases towards the proximal (top) end of the stocking. This gradient pressure promotes better venous blood flow which in turn will control swelling, varicosities, leg fatigue, and other problematic leg conditions.
Why should I wear "support" stockings?
During a lifetime, over 70% of all women and over 50% of all men will develop varicose veins or similar venous disorder, for the reasons referred to above. 80% of varicosities in women occur during child bearing years. The wearing of graduated compression stockings not only relieves the pain and discomfort of varicose veins, leg fatigue, swelling, etc., but will help to prevent these problems from occurring. Therefore, it is better not to wait for the problem to occur, but to take measures to prevent it.
I am only 30 years old. Why should I have to wear stockings like my Grandmother wore?
Modern, state of the art, equipment and yarns enable manufacturers to produce "support" stockings that are so sheer that it is practically impossible to distinguish them from fashion stockings. They come in an array of colors that will enhance any apparel and in sizes to fit most everyone. They are produced in compression range from 15 mmHg to 40 mmHg. Your doctor or supplier will assist you in choosing the correct compression.
Men's socks are produced in an 'over-the-calf' style, in the same compression range. They are very stylish and come in several colors to match any attire.
Why do my feet and legs swell when on an airplane?
This is cause by the change in atmospheric pressure, as well as the inactivity during the flight. This condition has been given the name "Economy Class Syndrome". You might be surprised to learn, that several people have died from this condition. When the venous flow slows down and the swelling occurs, this provides the best condition for a blood clot, which has occurred several times, resulting in death. Gradient compression hosiery will help to prevent this from occurring.
