You just called your best girlfirend, totally excited about the interview you just scored with the dream job, or at least the job before your dream job and now you are freaking out! "What in the world am I going to wear?!" you say. You stood in front of your closet for 20 minutes straight without even moving, just frozen because you arent sure what would work. We have all been there including the person(s) who will be interviewing you. Here is a few tips to maybe give you a little more confidence when it comes to putting your best foot forward.

Step 1: DO YOUR RESEARCH

Even if you don't have any personal contacts at the potential place of employment you can always call the HR Department and ask what the company dress code is.

Step 2:  REFINE THE DETAILS

After determining the essential garment (i.e suit, dress or matched outfit) you MUST gather together the accessories. My personal recomendations for name brands is either Tahari or Kasper for suits or White House Black Market for mixed pieces. Remember not to overdue it on the jewlery. I personally like Ann Taylor, Chicos, or J Jill accessories. If you are going with a necklace make sure it is understated. Here I would reccomend if you like to wear earings stay with studs or very short drop earings. No shoulder dusters! Keep the rings down to a minimum. Absoultely no thumb rings or index rings. Stay with the traditional ring fingers, at least for now. As far as pocketbooks go, again stay conservative. Pick a bag that is neutral in shade, perhaps white, black or beige, nothing loud or printed.  This rule also applies to the shoes. Which sould by the way be freshly polished and totally free of scuffs. These are the small details that sometimes get overlooked in a rush but beleive me they count almost more than what you say.  You know what else is a nice accessory to have? Try a watch. No only does it say "sophistication" it also implies that you have it together when it comes to time management. :)

Step 3: BE WELL GROOMED

Try your best to get an appointment with your hair stylist either the morning or day before the interview and include an appointment with the aesthisian as well. Your hair must be neat and a style that is up to date. Absoultely NO Ponytails! Get your eyebrows waxed and have a fresh manicure done. Remember even if you do have a smoking resume, these HR people have seen dozens of candiates before you so every detail is coming into play here.  

Step 4: BE YOURSELF, BE PROFESSIONAL

Again, remember that the interviewer is just a person like you who herself/himself has been in the same spot. They understand that being interviewed and placed on the spot can be nerve racking. Be yourself. If you have a litney of scripted answers it will come through and will be a turn off. Just be honest in your responses. I think alot of times these people are going to pick who they personally like the best anyway. At the same time, don't tell the interviewer the intimate details of your personal life either. Keep it basic and light but honest and friendly and you will do great! Be confident when you sit down and remember if the job is meant to be yours, it will!
