We cast & kiln fire Terra cotta Pottery here in our little shop in the woods. You already know can set it out in your garden, and you can put it in your home, but there are a few things you might not know about this stuff....
Did you know you can paint terra cotta pottery? You can go to your local hobby shop or Wal Mart store and buy some acrylic paints, flat black spray paint, and clear spray paint.
We usually start by base coating the entire piece with flat black spray paint. Why black? well if you are not happy with your end result, or make a mistake you can simply spray another coat of black on the piece and start again!!
Next you are going to paint the piece with acrylic paints and let it dry, when you are finished and happy with your piece you can seal it with clear spray paint. 3 coats (letting each coat dry well before adding the next coat) will keep it safe for years.
For those of you who are more into ceramics, you can also glaze and kiln fire terra cotta. It will be fired to an 06 just like bisque glazes are done.
Did you know you can soak a piece of terra cotta in a bucket of water for a few hours, then paint Buttermilk on terra cotta piece, set it in a shady area of your garden, and eventually moss will grow on it? You can paint the entire piece, or just portions of it to give it a really unique look!!
Did you know Toads love terra cotta in the garden? We have many toads who live in our garden and eat TONS of mosquitoes and other pests. If you put your terra cotta in a shade place, they will come!! We have gotten so many emails from folks who can not believe their little toads have moved into their toad houses, it is unbelievable!!
We hope this will give you a few ideas for your next Spring garden.
