Lab created or Synthetic Gemstones are Man made "Duplicates" of a natural gemstone.

This is a very popular question asked by many customers.

Lab Created/Synthetic Gemstones are done in lab with same composition of a gemstone that is wanted to be duplicated.  A Gemological test would reads the same on their instruments for the lab created as a natural gemstone.

...Only the ~Microscope~ can tell the difference between a natural gem or lab gem...

Nature leaves ~finger prints~ and the lab created gems have ~different~ finger prints.

Gem manufacturing falls into two categories:

...Melt and Solution...

The "flux melt system" is used by taking the component of a gem like corundum and put it in a pot made of platinum tat than can hold a high temperature.

First it is melted and then a small piece of natural corundum is added.  This is used as a seed...then wait and let it "grow"...  A lab gem grows faster and cleaner than in nature.

That is why the lab rubies and sapphire are cleaner.

The "Hydrothermal system" ...Takes a high temperature too but the components are melted in water and the tool used looks like a peculator you might have at home.

This system shows that the gems are even "cleaner" than the melt system and they ~grow faster~

...Sometimes in a few days or even hours...

Just Remember that a gemologist can tell you if the gem is natural or lab grown.

Tips on Buying Colored Stones:

When looking at unmounted stones, view them through the side as well as from the top

Remember that color is one of the most important considerations

View the stone against a "Dead-White" Background

Check the stone's color in several different types of light

Give special attention to the wearability...Fragile stones will not hold up

to daily wear...

Questions to Ask:

Is this a genuine, natural stone, or a synthetic?

(Synthetic stones are genuine but not ~natural~)

Is the color natural?

(Most colored gemstones are routinely color enhanced)

Heat treatment is not a fraudulent practice when used on certain gems

...On which the results are permanent...

This practice is acceptable to the following stones:

Amber (Sun spangles), Amethyst (Lighten color), Aquamarine (Deepen color), Carnelian (Produce More Color), Citrine (Heating Varieties Quartz), Kunzite (Improve Color), Morganite (Change color), Sapphire (Lighten/Intensify Color), Tanzanite (Produce a more desirable blue shade)

If purchasing an really expensive stone...you should ask...

Clarify what the stone's name means?

Is the clarity acceptable?

...A lot of flaws, inclusions could distract from the beauty and might...

...Make the stone more vulnerable to breakage with normal wear...
