Shipping and handling can very often become a nuisance while selling items online. In the past I have both over and under charged for shipping. Below are a few tips that may help you save a few bucks at the post office.
- Never pay for shipping supplies. The post office will supply Priority Mail boxes free of charge through their website. They will deliver these boxes, in unlimited quantities, to your doorstep for free!
- If you do not want to ship using Priority Mail, simply ask friends and family to save any boxes and or shipping supplies that they may come accross.
- Office supply stores, such as Staples, charge up to $12 for items such as bubble wrap and packaging peanuts, items that are thrown away every single day by friends, family, and neighbors.
- A good alternative to bubble wrap and packaging peanuts is newspaper. Crumble it into balls and pack it tight and it has the same effectiveness for much cheaper.
- PRIORITY MAIL FLAT RATE BOXES are a great way to ship heavier items that are going longer distances, fast and cheap. The flat rate for these boxes is $8.10. A great value for someone such as myself, based out of New York if shipping to California, Hawaii, Alaska, etc...Without flat rate some of these packages can get very expensive.
- Never undercharge for shipping. There is nothing worse than selling an item, and then losing money because of shipping. If you are unsure about shipping charges simply search completed Ebay items for the item you are selling or something similar. Check what previous sellers have charged to help determine your price.
- It is always better to overcharge on shipping. If you charge $10 to ship an item and it costs you $22, you can kiss that $12 goodbye. However, if you charge $15 and it costs $5, you can always refund the difference if that makes you feel better.
These are just a few tips you may find helpful. Always feel free to ask any questions!
