Vivienne Tam- A Guide to Vivienne Tam & Fashion
Top designer Vivienne Tam was born in Canton, China and literally smuggled into Hong Kong when she was just three years old. She got her start in fashion in Hong Kong, but found the climate in this city was not suited to her further growth as a designer. So Tam moved to New York and began the task of interesting retail buyers in her Chinese-inspired creations.
Once she got her first break (from Henri Bendel), her career took off. Since then, Asian influences have continued to be an important part of Tam's fashion aesthetic. In 1997, her Buddha collection landed her on the cover of influential Women's Wear Daily, and she was officially recognized as a hot young talent. She's even written a book on Chinese style, called "China Chic."
Tam's designer clothing can typically be founded in upscale retailers like Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. Julia Roberts, Madonna, Beyonce, and Sarah Jessica Parker are among the diverse group of celebrities intrigued by Tam's ability to mix the mystery and mystique of ancient Chinese culture with the sensibilities of modern American women. Tam's fashion enterprises continue to expand--she's recently designed cell phone covers for Motorola and launched a line of dresses for day into cocktail wear.
Tam's designs appeal to women who appreciate both luxury and originality. Anyone fascinated or inspired by the rich history, art, and culture of China will be interested in Tam's clothing. On the other hand, one need not have an interest in Asia to appreciate Tam's sumptuous and sometimes sexy designs.
