Are you intending to buy a violin, viola, cello or double bass?
3 things you should know when looking for the right instrument, so that it doesn't end up on your wall as a work of art!
1. If you take a violin, that is not properly set up, to a violin shop they will charge you up to $150.00 and more to set it up.
2. Many sellers of stringed instruments claim that their instruments are properly set up and ready to play - I have seen innumerable 'set up' instruments that ended up at the wall of the purchaser as a cheap work of art because these instruments were not worth the expense to have them PROPERLY set up.
3. If you are not buying from a string specialist, chances are high that your new instrument has
* a bad bridge, either too high, too low, not adjusted to the shape of the body of the violin, wrong curve, wrong distance of strings, too thick or too thin, warped, made of poor timber
* bad fitting of pegs and peg holes
* grooves in the nut are too high or too low or the distance between the grooves is wrong or unequal (where the strings enter the peg box)
* bad quality bow
* very cheap rosin
* the finger board is often warped, even if it is made of ebony timber (often it is not ebony)
* pegs are often not made of ebony, but ebven if they are the fitting is often unsatisfactory
Because of all of these issues, I highly recommend to go to a Specialist, such as Animato, that sells good quality instruments on Ebay and in their shop in Brisbane (Mail orders to any place on earth!).
