In this guide I have listed the various perfumes and soaps produced
by
Victor Vaissier.
Victor Vaissier started as a small family owned soap factory at the end of the 19th century. By the turn of the century, it transformed itself into a large family company known throughout the world for its luxurious soaps called “Prince of Congo”. Along with success, Victor Vaissier became the official supplier of the courts of Belgium, Romania and the Bey de Tunis. The company is best known for its superb chromolithographed soap labels in the Art Nouveau style. By using these mercantile techniques particularly advanced for its time, it revived the imaginary exoticism and benefits from the colonial enthusiasm of the time to increase the prosperity of its business.
Victor Vaissier was very fond of violets, and incorporated the newly discovered synthetic chemical Ionone (1893), into his soaps and perfumes. It is a clear to pale yellow liquid with a woody, dry, fruity, raspberry and violet smell.
Two Advertisements from the 1892 Newspaper “The Nursing Record”:
“SAVON DES PRINCES du CONGO (Victor Vaissier, Paris and Roubaix).-These exquisite manufactures, which are thoroughly in keeping with the high reputation of M. Victor Vaissier, are perhaps the finest and most carefully-prepared soaps we have yet had to examine and test. They are made with single, double, and triple extract perfume. Each cake is consequently delightfully fragrant. This soap is remarkably free from anything that is likely to injure the skin. It is sufficiently hard not to be wasteful, and leaves a pleasant and softening feeling after use.”
“EXTRAIT du CONGO au LILAS BLANC ’’ (Monseiur Victor Vaissier, Paris and Roubaix)., This perfume is a veritable extract of lilies, and is remarkably delicate and lasting, It is admirably suited for those invalids who are tired of, or do not appreciate, Eau de Cologne and lavender- water, the usual perfume adjuncts of the sick- room. If diluted with spirit or water, and used with a spray, its effects will be appreciated.”
