I have been an unopened collector on and off since 1991. I am writing this guide based on what is available now on Ebay and in the market and my opinion on what to buy and what to avoid.
1.Stay away from Xmas packs. I believe some are real but most are not. You can find any year about any day on ebay and this wasn' t always the case. They used to pop up on occasion only. They cannot be graded since they were repackaged anyway. The prices of them have come down considerably also.
2.Cellos from 1970 to 1972 are 30 to 33 card cellos. They came in their own individual box. Topps did not make grocery cellos with 12 cards in them.Avoid these!
3.Buy ONLY graded packs. It is hard to tell on ebay if a pack was resealed since you cannot see the seals very well. Cellos can many times be homemade from scratch. Wax packs can be resealed but it is much easier to tell in person with the packs.
3. If a seller is selling a "raw"pack, why don't they spend the extra $20 to grade it. They would most definately get the money back since raw packs even in the 60's sell for hundreds less.
4.You also see many sellers saying "I have never opened this pack for the 20 years that I have owned it but I cannot guarantee the other years that I have not. Basically this means it is not guaranteed unopened and probrably not unopened!
THE MARKET
1969 and 1964 seems to be the toughest of the 1960s topps wax packs. They come up on occasion and sell at a price of at least $500 graded.
1963 is the toughest of the 1960s cellos to find and may go as high as $1000 graded.
1963 Fleer is probrably the toughest pack of all in the 1960s. You may see 1 or 2 a year come up for auction and once again could go for around $1000 graded.
1975 topps minis are constantly seen and can be bought for less than $50 graded.
1971 topps boxed cellos and racks are seen on occasion. Racks much more than cellos. But I believe even if you pay a premium for these you are making an excellent investment since high graded single 1971 cards are and will continue to rise in price and this is the best chance to get 9s or 10s .
1975 topps cellos graded can be bought for under $100 graded and I would stock up on these too since the colored borders are tough and single high graded 1975s will rise in the future. This is probrably a pack worth opening too!
1950s wax packs are extremely expensive. I would expect to spend at least $1000 for any wax pack in the 1950s and It can go much much higher than that. Occasionally they come up in auction. 1959s do come up but even then $1500 graded would be an EXCELLENT BUY!
1959 topps cello packs can be found quite often. The price is over $500 graded. Right now there are plenty available but I would grab one if you could because they will only climb in value as they disappear. 1958 cellos are also seen regularly. However the price for a graded one will be around $1000.
1957 topps cellos come up on occasion too but also do sell very high over$1000 graded.
Overall, unopened packs in my opinion are the best investment in baseball cards, but can be risky if you don't buy graded material.Remember if a pack is ungraded and is a steal remember it is a steal from you not by you! Hope this guide helps anyone collecting unopened material.
