I have often seen people looking for identification help for this particular style of costumed little hard plastic dolls. Hollywood Doll Mfg, (Glendale, California) made a huge amount and variety of dolls in almost every size, style & material from the 1940's through the 1960's. Whether you are trying to identify and replace a specific miniature hard plastic Hollywood doll you had as a child or looking to find the name for a doll you would like to sell, hopefully you will find this list to be useful. I've seen these gals mis-ID'd as Nancy Ann Storybook & all sort of different dolls.
The information / lists below were copied from small booklets that were included with the dolls. The booklets I used were from 2 Hollywood dolls with different booklets - specifically Little Shepherdess from the Toyland series & Queen for a Day (not part of a particular series). From what I have been able to find, these 2 dolls are from 1948 & 1947, so any newer dolls would not be listed here.
These small dolls are hard plastic and usually from around 5 1/2" to 6 1/2" tall, with sleep eyes, jointed arms, legs & head, (some legs are very stiff & may appear to be un-jointed). If they are still in their original box, they are easy to identify. Although the same square flat box with blue stars & "Hollywood" was used for a variety of the dolls, they would have also had a sticker specifically naming the particular doll. The doll's clothing or costumes usually had snaps, but undergarments may have been of a more permanent nature. The dolls were more of an inexpensive display or collectors doll, vs a more durable dress-up type of doll. Some of the booklets - like the Shepherdess, have a poem or little story to match the doll, other's like the one with Queen For a Day are a more generic list that could have been included with a variety of the dolls.
Most of the dolls are still available very inexpensively for anyone looking for that childhood replacement or to start a vintage doll collection on a budget. Plus, as an added bonus, although most of them have lovely outfits & look nice for display, they don't take up a lot of space!
