Do you ever find that one special doll that you'd just about kill to have? But you don't put in a bid. You have a snipe program and you enter your highest bid there to be placed in the last few seconds of the auction. In doing so, you may have made a mistake that will cost you that precious doll. My advice - bid right away. Even if only with an opening amount. You have more than likely "saved" the auction by doing so. How many times have you put that one special doll on your watch list, only to find, moments later, that it's "Ended - Seller ended listing early because the item is no longer for sale". I think we all know what happened there. A buyer offered a certain price and the seller ended the listing, thus saving herself final value fees. This is not only illegal (per eBay) but unfair to potential buyers. As a seller, I've often been asked to do this very same thing. I will respond by stating I'll accept a fair Buy It Now price and will change my auction accordingly. But I've never cancelled an auction. As a buyer as well, I've asked a seller to consider changing his terms to Buy It Now and have occasionally been successful. Snipe programs are great - I use them myself, but go ahead and get the bidding started the old fashioned way. Your seller will be less inclined to cancel for a high offer.
