Vince Young: The Next Top NFL QB Is Vince Young
Many sports commentators and fans have speculated that Vince Young might just be the next top quarterback in the NFL. Young found a place in the national spotlight on January 4th, 2006, when he helped lead his University of Texas Longhorns to a stunning victory over rival California team, the USC Trojans. Since this Rose Bowl victory, things have moved fast for Vince Paul Young, Jr.
Just a few days after the game, Houston, Texas declared a day in honor of this young phenom. Just four days after the game, Young announced that he was ready for the NFL draft--opting to forego his final year of NCAA eligibility to get into the big time early. His college statistics are profound. Over a three-year period from 2003 to 2005, Young compiled more than 6,000 passing yards, got credited with more than 44 touchdowns, and rushed a whopping 3,127 yards. He is the winningest University of Texas quarterback of all time with a 30-2 record.
He has received dozens of honors for his performance, including the Rose Bowl MVP for 2006, the Manning Award for 2006, and the Cingular Player of the Year Award. In previous years, he won the Sporting News award for best high school prospect and the 2003 award for Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year.
Young's determination and bravado comes from a mix of incredibly tough training, natural athleticism, and intelligent coaching. His life has not been easy. His father remains in jail for a 2003 conviction, and he has had to overcome a gangland past. Young's story proves that a love of the game and determination can pay off, and now he'll have the chance to show the world what he can do on football's largest stage--the NFL. If he makes it big, collectors will be amassing football merchandise with Young's name on it.
