AFTER YOU READ THIS, do a Google search for class action lawsuits ventless gas fireplace - you will see my guide and then you will see one from CHIMNEYSWEEPSONLINE.  There you will be able to read thousands of similar complaints.  Contractors love to push VENTLESS FIREPLACES on you.  Mine is an EMPIRE but the brand does not matter - they are all dangerous and nasty.  Contractors will tell you it will cut your heating bill drastically, puts out massive heat, blah, blah, blah.  What they don't tell you is that THEY ARE NOT MEANT TO BE USED AS A SOURCE OF HEAT!  Hello - then what are they for - collecting dust???????????  If you use it as a source of heat, you will be sorry.  They let fumes out into your house (because they are ventless) and those fumes mix with cooking odors, perfume, hairspary, candles - shall I go on ???  The result is sooting on your walls, furniture and carpet and this is not covered by ANY insurance company.  Why - because it is ventless...........  DO YOURSELF A BIG FAVOR - IF YOU WANT A GAS FIREPLACE, MAKE SURE IT IS VENTED. ALSO IF YOU HAVE A GLASS FACE - FORGET THE HEAT - I HAVE HAD ONE OF THOSE TOO!!    How do I know this - because we just had a monster house built and got one of those awful things.  Yes, it puts out wonderful heat and you literally have no electric bill at all in the winter however I am now looking for a class action lawsuit to join to collect for damages. My living room walls, which are 25' tall need to be repainted as well as the ceiling!  People that turn them on now and then won't notice anything happening at first - it will take time but they will see the damage these fireplaces cause.  People like me that use it all the time will go into shock after just 2 months of daily use.  SAVE YOURSELF FROM THE AGONY OF THESE THINGS CAUSE - GET A VENTED FIREPLACE.  ** If you do research on the web you will see that some states have outlawed these horrible things.  There are dozens of complaints on the web from other people that have purchase these and think about this........all of the chemicals that it produces that damages your home - what do you think it is doing to you and your children ?????????????????  I personally see a class action lawsuit in the near future and I intend to win.  This will not be the first class action suit I have been involved in and won !!!  If you are experiencing the sooting, etc....... please contact me and I will share the information I have found.
