A VOR DEM FEINDE clasp (35.2 mm x 6.7 mm, 2.5 grams) to the Oldenburg combatant Friedrich-August-Kreuz II. Klasse (Friedrich August Cross 2nd Class) was established on 20 September 1918 by Grand Duke Friedrich-August of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg.  This represented an award for service on the front and began to be awarded with the Cross.  The Friedrich-August-Kreuz II. Klasse, Oldenburg's equivalent of the Prussian Iron Cross, was established on 24 September 1914 by Grand Duke Friedrich-August of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg in 2 classes.  It was awarded for combatant or non-combatant meritorious service.  Awards prior to 20 September 1918 were not issued this clasp retroactively, however a provision was made that those entitled may purchase a clasp.

The clasp was normally of the same metal as the Cross (usually iron - making it responsive to a magnet test, buntmetal, or zinc and typically painted or lacquered) and was a long raised border rectangle with VOR DEM FEINDE in raised lettering.  This clasp was normally 35.2 mm x 6.9 mm and weighed 2.5 grams, although some in buntmetal varied in width down to 35.0 mm.  It was attached to the ribbon with 2 flat non-pointed soldered prong backs.  The reverse of the clasp was not hallmarked for an original official issue, although a few (very few) of the private purchase clasps were.  Some of the privately purchased clasps were of the slip-on type (soldered about 1 mm from each end), normally made of lacquered or painted zinc, 34.25 to 35.2 mm x 6.7 to 6.9 mm, weighing 2.1 to 2.5 grams.  Some others were manufactured with 2 flat pointed prong backs soldered to the reverse.  It's important to remember that these prongs break off and that repairs were made to the clasp.

The clasp in a miniature form was also worn on the miniature ribbon bar, if authorized.  These were not officially issued and can be found in many styles and of a wide assortment of metals.

My best advice is:  Buy one from a specialist dealer who will offer you a 100% guarantee.

There are copies of this clasp on the market (which are typically attached to a Friedrich-August Cross 2nd Class).  Please review my guides for the Friedrich-August Cross 2nd Class (http://reviews.ebay.com/Friedrich-August-Cross-2nd-Class_W0QQugidZ10000000002683139) and the buntmetal forgery (http://reviews.ebay.com/A-new-forgery-Friedrich-August-Cross-1st-Class_W0QQugidZ10000000002678298).   For further information on medals, please see my other guides and blog (http://blogs.ebay.com/tsa-li).  Thanks for viewing!
