We've all heard the term 'Mongolian' used to describe what are supposed to be the finest type of Cashmere fibers in the world, but did you know fiber length, roaming height, and harvesting process can severely affect integrity, feel, warmth and durability of the final product? If you've been noticing that the 'Cashmere' products you've felt recently can vary widely in texture, feel, silkiness and thickness, here’s why: Mongolian Cashmere is indeed considered the world's finest grade of Cashmere, but that's only the beginning. Crucial factors such roaming height, harvesting, fiber length and weave help define the quality of the product you receive. Before the fiber is ever removed from these rare herds, you may wonder just how important of a factor roaming truly is. Herd roaming height is key, with the majority of this fine species remaining near an 8,000 foot level. Kashmir goats depend on the fibers surrounding their neckline for survival. The higher they roam, the denser those fibers must be in order to properly maintain the animal's warmth level for survival.

With roaming ranges of approximately 15,000 feet, that’s nearly double the standard. "Is there a difference," you may ask. It's the difference of being out in harsh elements in a windbreaker versus a down-filled parka. Thicker fibers for the goat mean thicker fibers for you. And so we move down the mountain with the herds. When our herds return for only a few short weeks each year, as the weather warms, the harvesting and fiber collection begins. Unlike collection of pelts or fibers such as pashminas, no herds are harmed in in our fiber collection. Carefully hand-combed throughout the densest neck region, lthe longest and silkiest 2.0" Cashmere fibers are gently removed through the use of a long, metal combing tool created specifically for this process. While fibers often found in garments or Bedding are standardly sheared, only hand-combing is utilized for harvesting, to carefully collect the precious batches of finest Cashmere.

Does shearing make a difference? You bet. While hand-combing is a rare, skilled and time-consuming process, it's the only process used in creation of our Specialty Cashmere items. Why? Because the common technique of shearing actually breaks the fiber, not only affecting length, but in turn drastically affecting silkiness, warmth levels and durability. Shearing processes with shorter fibers drastically reduce warmth, weight and feel, not to mention aiding in the cause of pilling or surface balling. But with the recent interest in this Noble fiber and its increasing popularity, manufacturers are offering cheap and inferior products in cost-cutting efforts we refuse to take. Utilization of low-grade, short and inferior fibers, or mixtures with coarser, inferior types such as Yak, Camel or Alpaca which highly contaminate Cashmere fibers. In fact, many manufacturers intentionally add these fibers to Cashmere as filler, portraying the addition as good rather than truthful: Yak, Camel or Alpaca inclusion greatly reduce Cashmere fabric quality. In fact, such additions result in extreme coarseness, much-reduced luster and sheen, poor durability and stiff drape. Our Cashmere items have no reason to cross the path of Yak, Camel or Alpaca fibers, so you'll find no chance of cross-contamination. In fact, we've taken it 3 steps further. First, our Cashmere is meticulously hand-combed and collected in extremely small batches, rather than mechanically shorn.
