I have already written another guide about offering a Free Shipping Promotion when buyers use the Buy It Now option.
Another way to increase bids and get more for your items is to offer another free shipping promotion: for multple purchases.
Many sellers, including myself, offer discounts on shipping charges when multiple items are purchased. But how about offering free shipping??
Here's how it works. I advertise the promotion both through using the eBay subtitle option and also in my items' listings. It is set up so that is a Buyer purchases 5 or more items within a week's time, they get free shipping on those items. As a result, you encourage bidders to bid on multiple items and increase their bid amounts because they are not taking into account the shipping costs.
Here's an example:
I recently had around 10 N Scale model train items up for auction, including several engines. I was hoping to sell them for between $20-30 a piece. I had one bidder who bought all four engines (and 2 other items) that I had up for auction at a price between $27 and $61 a piece. That bidder was outbid several times and kept coming back and bidding higher so that he won at least 5 items to take advantage of the free shipping offer. Shipping cost me $7 for all the items that he won, and all total I made close to $200 on his purchases.
Another category that I have been successful with this promotion is CDs. Especially if you are selling CDs in the same genre, it is easy to get bidders to bid on multiples. Plus you can easily ship 5 or more CDs via Media Mail cheaply. Again, bidders will be more likly to bid higher if they don't have to pay for shipping charges and if they get outbid, they are more likely to come back and rebid.
