There are several products that I am aware of for dry cleaning your clothing and other small items at home in your dryer.

I have used and sold both.  I try to keep both products listed.

The first is DRYEL.  It requires the use of a bag which is provided in the starter kit.  You put your items to be cleaned in the bag with the special damp cloth provided.

  • You can pre-spot (preferably fresh) spots with the stain remover and absorbent pads included in the Dryel kit.
  • Kit also includes instructions, fabric bag with zipper, 4 dryer-activated moist cloths which each clean about 4 garments
  • It is said that the bag helps prevent stretching of item while being cleaned.
  • The product has a rather strong perfume that lingers after cleaning.
  • The scent can be useful to determine which items you have cleaned and which still need cleaning.  It would also help to eliminate any musty odor from clothing having been in storage.
  • Refills of the moist cloths are available.
  • It is important to hang items cleaned as soon as dryer stops to avoid ironing.
  • I think it is worth it to set a separate, loud timer.

When used as directed this product safely cares for sweaters, blouses, suits, dresses, slacks, skirts, jackets scarves, vests and small blankets and pillows.

  • This product is not formulated for leather, velvet, suede or fur.
  • Put no more than about 4 garments in bag.  The exact number depends on size of the garment.  Bag should not be stuffed.
  • Requires 30 minutes on medium to high heat in dryer.
  • Clean dryer filter before using product.
  • Important to follow directions!
  • Summary:  put in bag, zip it, put in dryer, steam it, hang it!

NOTE:  I recently found about 3 small, old reddish brown stains on the front of a light colored wool skirt.  I figured it wasn't very hopeful that they would come out.  Amazingly, when I treated the stains with the DRYEL stain remover thay disappeared like magic.  I ran the skirt (and several other items) through the dryer with dry cleaning product and the skirt is as good as new!

The second product is DRY CLEANERS SECRET.

  • This product does not require the use of a bag.  This allows dust and lint (and maybe hair) to go into the lint filter.
  • It has a very mild fragrance that is designed to dissipate within an hour after cleaning.  I don't really notice the fragrance of this product after clothes have been cleaned.
  • Box contains 6 moist cloths that will clean about 4 garments each.

Dry Cleaners Secret came out with a new and improved formula in December 2005.

  • I will make the most obvious comparison first.  The older product requires 30 minutes in the dryer and the new product requires 20 minutes!
  • The new product has also been improved in its formulation.

With either the old or the new formula you can

  • pre-spot small (preferably fresh) spots.
  • be assured that dust and lint get trapped in dryer filter
  • buy product in a box that is compact and can be stored with an economy of space.

With both old and new Dry Cleaners Secret, it is is important to follow the directions!

  • Use medium heat in the dryer - no high heat - use medium heat.
  • Items being cleaned must tumble freely and must not block the dryer vent.  Therefore, no comforters or other large items such as sleeping bags.
  • Clean dryer filter before using product to ensure good air flow.
  • If you wish to spot before cleaning, you can use the moist cloth provided.  Follow instructions.
  • Do not use Dry Cleaners Secret on leather, velvet, suede, or fur.
  • When used according to directions, DCS safely cares for blazers, small blankets, blouses, dresses, knits, pillows (must tumble freely), scarves and ties, skirts, slacks, suits, sweaters and vests.
  • Can use in gas and electric dryers.
  • Summary: put in dryer, add moist cloth, clean it, hang it!

Precaution:

  • With all products for dry cleaning at home using your dryer, it is a good idea to wash your hands after putting moist cloth in dryer.  If you are a person who is extremely sensitive to chemicals, it would be a good idea to check with manufacturer before use.  Both products have 800 numbers you can call for more information.  I have not had any skin problems with any of these products.

One problem solved:

  • Using the older Dry Cleaners Secret formula I spotted a silk skirt and it left a spot after cleaning.  I called the 800 number and the very helpful customer service woman told me to tumble the skirt by itself for about 20 minutes more on medium heat.  That solved the problem.

Dry cleaning bill:

  • I have cut my dry cleaning bill down substantially using these products.  It is said that this kind of product increases the time between professional dry cleanings.

No ironing!

  • I have not ironed anything that I dry cleaned at home.  I strongly suggest that you set a timer and hang promptly--unless you really like to iron!

Regarding the number of garments cleaned in each load:

  •  I cleaned a long wool coat by itself, and I have cleaned more than four silk scarves in one load.  Use your judgment.  Just be sure the air in the dryer is moving freely.

My intention in writing this Guide:

  • To present as much information as possible in a way that compares these products fairly.  Please refer to packaging for complete details.

NOTE:   I use this product regularly and my dry cleaning bill has plummeted.
