Think of Plasti Dip as liquid heat shrink tubing. However, no heat is required to cure. When Plasti Dip is applied to most anything, it dries quickly and shrinks to fit perfectly. Like a rubber glove, the final coat is flexible, stretchable AND sometimes removable. When applied to smooth surfaces (shiny metal, glass), you can easily remove Plasti Dip by scoring with a knife or picking at an edge. It will peel off with NO sticky residue or mess. However, when applied to porous surfaces or materials (like wood, paper, fabric), Plasti Dip will not come off. To increase adhesion on metal or glass, Plasti Dip PRIMER is recommended. It is NOT required but does increase the adhesive quality by up to 400%. Primer is available only in quart and larger sizes and is grey in color.
The most common complaint we hear about Plasti Dip is storage life. As a solvent-based product, it will dry out over time and if not properly stored become unusable. HOWEVER.... even a dry can of Plasti Dip can be resurrected! By adding Plasti Dip THINNER or Naphtha, Plasti Dip can be restored or thinned. Unlike paints, Plasti Dip products can be rejuvenated and redissolved if necessary.
When storing Plasti Dip products, be sure the can is sealed AIR TIGHT. For the original 14.5 oz. can, the plastic lid is not sufficient for long term storage. It simply does not have the air tight quality needed to keep the solvents contained. HINT: Drop the entire can in a full-size mason jar. The can fits perfectly and mason jars are air tight. This will insure you product remains usable for a very long time. The manufacturer has since introduced a 7.25 oz. "Junior" sized can and the new 22 oz. size which are both in more traditional air-tight paint cans. Storage life for these products is much improved.
Keep in mind, the solvent-base is what makes Plasti Dip work so well. When adding multiple coats, Plasti Dip's solvents "melt" the surface of the previous coat making a bond that actually creates one thicker coating. Paints add layers on top of layers and become brittle. The thicker you make Plasti Dip, the stronger and more enduring it becomes. This also adds the cushioned effect desirable for tool handles and other applications.
Liquid Electrical Tape behaves similarly to Plasti Dip but the main difference is its vinyl base finish (like regular electrical tape). Consider using Liquid Tape on any electrical connection, including RF (radio) connectors and junctions. There is no need to use anything else. Liquid Tape will completely seal and waterproof. Adding regular tape first and then coating with Liquid Tape is not recommended as the regular electrical tape creates air pockets and gaps. Let Liquid Tape do all the work! It too will remove more easily than coax seal, silicone or sticky tapes. Plus, it actually cleans the surface when removed!
When coating items with Plasti Dip, remember this important tip. DIP VERY SLOWLY AND REMOVE EVEN SLOWER. Let Plasti Dip adhere and flow smoothly. Quick motions encourage glopping and dripping which resulting in uneven coats and poor coverage. Let the coating dry completely before repeating the process. The look of wet Plasti Dip is always disappointing... so WAIT UNTIL DRY to decide if you like the result. Remember, you are working with liquid rubber, not paint and this means the product cures fully over time. Since this product "self-levels" when drying, it is not necessary to get a perfectly even liquid coat. As it dries and shrinks, most blemishes will disappear.
For best results at least 3 coats is recommended. One coat is never enough and you will be disappointed if you apply less than 2 coats. Touch ups are fine should you find a spot too thin or missed. Just use a small brush or even a dipped knife blade to add more. While tough and durable, Plasti Dip can get nicked or torn. Recoating or touching up repairs the damage completely!
You can dip, paint, spray, dab or pour Plasti Dip. Dipping is not the only option! If paint, just be aware that the solvents do start to evaporate quickly so you will need to work fast to insure an even finish. Craft syringes make a great way to apply Plasti Dip precisely too.
Plasti Dip and Liquid Tape are both available in liquid and aerosol sprays. Use the spray when trying to cover large areas or create an even finish. Award Winning Liquid Tape Spray is ideal for waterproofing electrical terminal strips and hard-to-coat surfaces and Plasti Dip spray is perfect for coating anything, including paper, fabric and furniture.
One important note. Plasti Dip is designed to coat, not fill. So while it may look like you can create molded items, you can not. If poured into a mold, it will coat the sides and shrink away from the center. To give you an idea what we mean... here is an example. If you coat a light bulb with Plasti Dip and then break the light bulb when it has dried, you will have a perfectly shaped rubber replica of a light bulb (with broken glass inside!) If you were able to take the light bulb apart and fill it with Plasti Dip, the Plasti Dip would first coat the inside of the bulb and then the excess Plasti Dip would eventually dry, forming a thick interior coating. If you again broke the glass, you would have another replica of a light bulb but with a thicker interior coating. To create molded items, liquid epoxy or acrylic products are best.
There are thousands of uses for Plasti Dip products so let your imagination run wild! Please feel free to ask before buying but don't hesitate to start with a small can to test and experiement. If you are like us, you will not only find Plasti Dip products practical, but fun to play with too!
Plasti Dip is available in 11 oz. Aerosol Spray and in liquid form in 7.25 oz, 14.5 oz., 22 oz., 1, 5 and 50 Gallon cans, pails and drums. Plasti Dip is also available with a UV inhibiting additive that protects both the item coated and the Plasti Dip itself from long term exposure to direct sunlight. This additive is standard in the Aerosol Spray but is only available in 1 Gallon and larger sizes of liquid.
