Just as the title says, I found by accident that baby wipes will take pretty much anything out of carpet.
I figured this out about a year ago. I had my daughter in Jan '06. My son was 4 at the time. I don't remember exactly what it was he spilt on the carpet. I'm thinking either chocolate or spaghetti sauce. I remember it was something that I thought would be hard to get out. I just happened to be changing a diaper at the time and grabbed the nearest thing I had (happen to be a baby wipe) to clean up the spill. Magically it came right out. I recommend buying a higher quality wipe. They tend to be more moist and thicker. I use Pampers myself.
I found it to work on my couch and clothes also. It can even make old stains less noticeable. I have had them completely take out a few small old stains.
It's best to use them on small very new spills. Any big spill still needs carpet cleaner. Mud if not in a high traffic area, needs to dry first. Try to vacuum what you can up then use a wipe.
On any liquid spill it is best to blot not rub the stain out. I do this by taking a bunch of paper towels, fold them, and step on them (with a shoe on) to help remove excess liquid. I quit when I can get a new bunch of paper towels and hardly anything comes out. Then I try the baby wipe (you can rub since the stain won't spread now). If that isn't getting you anywhere or the spill is just too big get the carpet cleaner. I use a foam cleaner which brings the stain to the top of the foam if let set long enough. That's where people go wrong they don't let the carpet cleaner set long enough. Don't let it set too long to where it dries up. Usually 3 minutes is enough. Wipe the excess foam up with a paper towel don't rub. Try to get under the foam when wiping so it all comes up together. Then come back with the wet wipe and the rest should come up.
Depending on the spill you may need to repeat the last step a few times but never let the spill dry completely. Keep applying carpet cleaner to keep the spill moist. I've even used water to keep a spill moist.
It's mostly trial and error that I've figured this out, but I have managed to have the same bottle of carpet cleaner for over 2 years now. Which is amazing when you have 2 kids.
I hope everyone tries this it really does work. If you thought this was helpful read my other baby wipe guides Use Baby Wipes to Remove Make-Up and Baby Wipes Work Great for Household Cleaning. I will keep baby wipes in my house always from now on. I also use them as kleenex. My daughter doesn't whine much if I wipe her nose with a baby wipe. And I never have to worry about the dryness that occurs with normal tissue if I have a cold or runny nose. That's one thing I hate.
