Improving the performance of DYNACO audio equipment in general is simple. IF you have the technical ability and manuals, tools and time. Replace all of the electrolytic capacitors with new high grade parts.
Old carbon type resistors are also a good place to upgrade to better parts. New metal film types will both restore the correct values that may now be off due to age and provide a lower noise component.
The next level of upgrade is to add high grade Metal/Poly bypass capacitors to the main signal flow capacitors. This can be done by utilizing 1 MFD capacitors wired in paralell to the existing ones for a low cost improvement or if your pockets are deep, replace the electrolytics with the same values using Metal/Poly capacitors.
If you want to keep going replace any disc caps with film types and bypass the power supply capacitors with Metal/Poly capacitors.
Tube type equipment has an added advantage of changing the sound by replacing the tube with different brands. Each brand having its own sound, reviews of the tubes can be found on the web. The european brands like Telefunken, Amperex, Mullard and Seimens are both expensive and wonderful sounding. Don't overlook the American brands though, RCA, Sylvania and GE are lower priced and the sound is also very good. Almost all new tubes are either Chinese or Russian and have a sound of their own, anywhere from very good to very bad!
Tube equipment may have old Selenium rectifiers for the low voltage power supply, these can be replaced along with the filter capacitors, I suggest purchasing a circuit board that simplifies this operation and also gives you the option to replace your tube type rectifier with solid state diodes for the high voltage. You should also repace the high voltage filter capacitors. Again there are circuit boards to make this job easier. Remember that capacitors have 2 values, capacitance (MFD) and voltage. Make sure you use a replacment value that is equal to or greater than the original voltage rating. Stay with the original capacitance value unless you really know what you are doing.
Feel free to contact us for any help or suggestions. Keep this in mind, IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE UNIT OR YOURSELF! Working with any energized electronic equipment is DANGEROUS! Leave it to a qualified technician if you don't have the experience, the life you save may be your own......JMR
