It is easy to upgrade your Playstation 3 PS3 Hard Drive storage space so you will have even more room for downloading movies, games, music, and software updates. Just follow these easy steps to remove your 40, 60, or 80 GB hard drive and replace it with a 320GB or 500GB hard drive.
I've done this successfully and have made these step-by-step directions so you can do the same.
you will need : - small phillips head screwdriver
- a USB hard drive to back-up your old PS3 drive (large enough storage space to hold your existing data)
- and a 2.5" SATA hard drive 5400RPM ( I recommend a 320GB or 500GB since these are currently a great value for the size)
First back-up your existing data currently on your PS3. Connect the USB hard drive to your PS3 (use the same USB jack in front which you use to charge your controllers) then select the BACKUP UTILITY option under the System Settings menu, now select BACK UP. Follow the onscreen instructions. Power Down. Disconnect the USB hard drive.
OK now to replace the PS3 drive. Disconnect the power to your PS3. Make sure you are grounded before you remove the HDD panel on the bottom of your PS3 (bottom when PS3 is standing or left side when PS3 is horizontal), just use your finger to pry it open; the cover panel is about the size of your finger and has a sticker that says "detach this cover when removing the hard disk". Gently unsrew the small screws - small screws strip easier than larger screws, so just take your time and use gentle pressure. Twist out the first blue screw & set it aside. Slide out the tray that holds the drive, and then remove the 4 silver screws. Remove the old drive.
Slide your new drive into the tray. Re-insert the 4 silver screws & don't overtighten. Insert the tray back into your PS3, slide the tray in and gently push it sideways to reconnect the pins. Now insert the Blue screw. Close up the PS3. Re-attach to your TV the way you had it and plug it in.
Turn on your PS3. Follow the instructions on screen to format your new drive.
When your see the media bar menu plug in the USB hard drive you used to back up your old PS3 data and select the RESTORE option under the System Settings/BACKUP UTILITY menu.
