Organic and unrefined are not the same thing. There are many companies in the US that are growing/raising organic food. The primary way to get an organic label, is not to genetically manipulate your product by using hormones. You can use pesticides as long as they are not derived from petroleum or sludge. Organically grown/raised can still be refined before it gets to the consumer. There is a US government fact sheet on the matter.
Unrefined is a process that is old world. No hormones, pesticides, or petroleum/sludge derived products in the grow/raise process. This also means that a machine or chemical was not used in the harvesting process either. The strongest source of unrefined product is the continent of Africa, where there isn’t wide spread access to chemicals, machines and hormones.
For the consumer, you get the product in its original form. You get the original color(s), the original smell, and no added fragrances. There is basic filtering out of the seeds of the nuts; that the oil or butter was derived from. So your oil, butter or soap might have some brown specs of shell still in it. This also means a longer natural shelf life without preservatives. To the present day, Africans have not relied on refrigeration, so the old world unrefined process has been essential to being able to keep these products usable for a couple of years.
