We do what we can, with the knowledge and support we have at the time.
Not always will the decisions we HAVE to make be the ones we WANT to make when it comes to our children.
Breastfeeding is a wonderful decision to make prior to having your baby. I encourage you to read and take classes etc., to learn as much as you can when you are not fatigued. Once you have the baby, seek assistance from a good practioner. Very few nurses in the hospital will have adaquate knowledge to help you with more than basic information concerning breastfeeding. Doctors get even less training (in general) about breastfeeding. Find a IBCLC (international board certified Lactation consultant) if possible, or someone else with LCE, LC in her title. Seek out a local La Leche League for mother to mother support. Most difficulties can be overcome. Don't be willing to give up without a fight. But if you must, know that every drop of breastmilk was worth the struggle it took to give it to your baby, and be proud of your accomplishment.
If it doesn't work out the way you planned it, that doesn't mean that it might not with your next baby. Each baby deserves the right to breastfeed. Even if it is for one day!
