Don't know if you're phone is unlocked or locked?  To be unlocked means that it is released to work on networks other than the one it is presently on.  The easiest way to check this is to borrow a friends SIM card from another network and try it in your phone.  If it works then your phone is unlocked.  If you find it is locked and you can't unlock it yourself online you will need to contact your existing network provider.   They have an obligation to unlock it for you and may charge a fee for such a service.

Note: Previously the latest model phones could not be unlocked independently.  The newest models (Nokia BB5, Samsung, LG, Sharp, Sony Ericsson, Sagem, Toshiba, Huawei, ZTE, Iphone, Alcatel, Blackberry, Motorola, Vodafone & Siemens) can now be unlocked using an unlock SIM wafer - see our eBay shop as we usually have these for sale.  For older models follow the link above...
