This guide is to provide individuals planning a wedding with information about the unity sand ceremony set, including how to perform the ceremony and Do-It-Yourself ideas.

Sand Ceremony:

The Unity Sand Ceremony is a novel alternative for the popular "unity candle ceremony" incorporated into many of today's weddings. The sand ceremony set is also more appropriate for an outdoor setting or a beach wedding. The essence is to symbolize the union of "two into one." Once the colored sand mixes, it cannot be separated again, thus providing the couple with a beautiful visual representation of their two lives joining in marriage.

There are many different ways to perform the ceremony. Below is an example of one way the ceremony can be performed.

Step One: The Groom will commence by pouring a portion of his colored sand into the central glass vase.

Step Two: The Bride will follow by pouring a portion of her colored sand also into the central vase creating a layered effect.

Step Three: To complete the ceremony, the Groom and Bride simultaneously pour the balance of their sand into the central container. To make this process a little easier, create a funnel using decorative paper. Personalize the funnel by including names, date or even poetry that holds a special meaning for the Bride and Groom. The co-mingling of the colored sand represent the joining of the Bride and Groom. Consult with your wedding officiate in order to customize the readings and sentiments that will accompany this ceremony.

Step Four: Following the wedding, the two outside vases can be used to display fresh flowers while the central vase will remain a cherished keepsake of your wedding day.

For religious ceremonies, couples can have the officiate start by pouring white sand into the center vase to represent the couple’s spiritual foundation. When the couple pours their sand into the center vase, the officiate can also add the white sand to represent the union of the couple with their spiritual foundation.

Blending Family Ceremony:

For families joining together through marriage, the blending family ceremony is also a great idea. Each member of the family, including the children, has a different sand color. The mixing of the various sand colors is a fitting way to symbolize the new Blended Family that will result from this union. Although there are no set guidelines for this ceremony, generally the sand is poured into the central vase in the following order:

1. Father
2. Mother
3. Children
4. Father & Mother together.

Readings and sentiments can be customized as desired.

Selecting Sand Colors:

There are no rules regarding what colors can be used during the ceremony. A popular color combination is white sand for the bride and black sand for the groom. Many local craft stores will carry a wide selection of colored sand, so it is possible to match the colored sand to your wedding colors.

DIY Sand Ceremony:

For the DIY bride, a sand ceremony can easily be created by selecting glass containers from a local craft store. The center vase that will hold the blended sand should be a larger container. This vase can be decorated with flowers, ribbon, seashells and other items that represent the bridal couple or match the wedding colors. The DIY bride can be really creative as almost any glass container will work and there are many unique sizes and shapes available at most craft stores.
