What's my problem??

So we go to our Parade of Homes in our city every year and as I walk through these immaculate, professionally decorated homes, I think, "I would love to hire one of these people to come decorate my home".....and THEN I remember....if I could afford this home, I could afford the decorator too.  So, I go home and mope and feel sorry for myself and my blank, well, everything!  Counters, walls, surfaces, shelves, etc...I wanted a look all my own.  Something that makes my home ME.

So what did I do??

I happened upon a commercial late one night for a paint roller that had the ability to paint two colors at the same time.  I THINK it was called Wall Magic, but I'm not sure. It has removable heads on either side of the roller.  It can be replaced with plain rollers or patterned rollers.  For under $20, I thought that looked interesting.  I found it in a local home store for the same price and also bought just two quart of paints in colors that would go anywhere in my house.  I was determined to spend less than $100 on the whole ordeal.  I left it sitting on my kitchen table for about a week before I got the courage to open it and the paint.  I finally decided to just do it--somewhere other people don't generally look...my bedroom bathroom.   I chose this place because number one, whoever created glass, see-through shower doors was obviously a man!  To boot, they don't even build doors on the bathrooms in master bedrooms anymore!  What the ?!?!?!  Anyway, I've always wanted to do something with it and I figured, if I mess up that bad, it would be easier to remove the paint from the glass than the wall.  I don't consider myself a Picasso or Martha Stewart either.  I opened the package, took out the tray and opened my two quarts of paint.  I chose sage green and a contrasting lighter shade of the same color.  I poured one color in one side and the other in the other side.  I attached the heads of the rollers and away I went....I rolled one strip in a vertical line up the front of the shower door.  It was interesting!  I kept going and before I knew it, I was done..in literally, like 5 minutes.  This roller was awesome!  I couldn't be done already!!  I looked around the house for more things..I was like a kid in the candy store...who's never seen candy before!!!  I also HATE glass tabletops.  My side table in the living room was the only piece of furniture left in my house with glass on it and I  had cleaned fingerprints for the LAST time.  I removed the glass and painted it the same way!  5 more minutes!  Well, now I was in trouble because there was nothing in there to match.  I looked around, got a little more brave and painted a cut-out shelf nearby.  I was an addict...I went crazy in the house...on the shelves, glass and even my dining room table. (That came later when I went to get two new colors and the table was getting really marred up.  I thought it might be easier to buy two quarts of paint than a new table)  My kids got in the action.  We each put a color on our hands and did another shower door with our handprints.  I was a wildwoman, rabid, crazy!!  (In a totally sane way, I swear!)  I had bought this paint kit and 4 quarts of paint and did this ALL.  Under $100?  You bet!  Not even close.

It can REALLY happen and YOU can be the one to do it.

Now, I can't believe the comments I get whenever someone comes in the house.  People ask me to come do theirs!  ME!  Simple me!  Now, 5 years later, we are moving :(  But guess what?  We sold the house to the FIRST people that looked at it and the wife kept gushing over all the "painted accents".  When she asked if I did it, she asked for my card!!  My what?!?!  I almost died laughing (internally--didn't want to lose the sale) but what a compliment!  So my advice?  Just do it!  Try it!

One last note...I took the accessories already in my bathroom (which I got at the most discounted store possible, by the way) and just handpainted simple items on the walls to match them.  I didn't care if they were symmetrical and I personally liked them being different and far from perfect.  I've posted some examples.  My husband loved it, my kids loved it, I had a blast doing it and spent barely any time or money.  Now, more people will enjoy it and I will enjoy painting the new home too.

P.S.  One last side note...on the glass and table tops, I did spray a clear lacquer for a nice finish that won't scratch, wear away, peel or chip. Clear lacquer spray
