Among the newest technology in Cordless Phones is Uniden's TRU 9480 series - an easy to install, affordable 5.8 Gigahertz system for the home or single-line business. Uniden offers this system pre-packaged with 1 to 4 handsets - around $49 for the single handset and base, and around $99 for the popular 9480-3 3-handset package. The system can be expanded as needed, up to a total of 10 handsets, by adding the TCX 905 expansion handset (available individually, in the $30 bracket). This also allows you to easily replace a broken handset without having to replace the entire system.
The system operates on the new 5.8 Gigahertz band - which offers better penetration of walls, improved usable range, and greatly reduced interference from/with other devices, when compared to earlier 2.4 GHz phones. My experience with it, to a few hundred feet from the base, has been crystal clear - so you could practicably have an extension in the garage or workshop, for example.
The system also offers Digital Security, in a couple of ways. First, the radio signals between the handsets and base are Digitally Encrypted - so nobody with a mere scanner will be able to listen in on your calls. Second, each handset is Digitally Registered to your base unit - so you won't have the problem of a neighbor making a call on your line, and vice versa. Two important considerations in today's world, especially if the neighbors are 'too close', as is the case for many of us.
A big advantage of this type of phone system is its Infinite Flexibility. Only ONE phone line connection is required, at the base unit. The base unit includes a Digital Answering Machine (no tapes to break), and integrated charging station for one handset (included). It also comes with a wall mounting bracket, if you desire to mount the base at higher than tabletop level for improved wireless range. (Mine sets on a low end table, and I've had no problems with the range, able to talk from anywhere on my half-acre lot). Each additional Handset (both those in the multi-packs, and the TCX 905 add-ons) require only a power outlet for their compact charger bases.
The Handsets are all identical (unlike some other systems), and are full-featured. They are a long and trim design, comfortable for both the small-handed and large-handed. The backlit buttons and LCD display, along with some of the other features, will make anyone who has ever used a good cellphone feel right at home. When making a call, you can first punch the call button for a dial tone and dial the number, as you're used to with home phones, OR you can punch in the number first and hit the call button, like you're used to with cellphones. The handsets will also support a Headset, via the cellular standard 2.5mm jack, if you prefer that. The Antenna is completely internal, in the earpiece end of the handset - no extendable piece to wear out or break off, and no stub to poke and snag everything it comes in contact with. There is also switchable 'T-Coil' support for Hearing Aid Compatibility - On if needed, of course, or Off to extend battery life if it isn't needed.
Also included with each Handset is a plastic snap-on Belt Clip - though personally I prefer just sliding the phone in a pocket. The placement of the belt clip, if you chose to use it, wraps around the antenna area of the handset, which would have some potential for reducing usable range.
The system supports Caller ID and Call Waiting Deluxe, storage of up to 100 Names with Two Numbers for each, Direct Link intercom among any pair of handsets (which can also serve as a Room/Baby Monitor, while the other handsets continue handling calls), Speakerphone option in each handset, 10 Speed Dial numbers, Redial (which remembers the last 3 numbers), Call Transfer, Conferencing, and Hold. The 100 Name/200 Number storage, and 10 Speed Dial numbers, can be individualized on each handset, so everyone in the family can have their own preferences - or you can easily set all identically, by simply setting up one handset, then zapping the settings wirelessly to the other handsets. There are 20 different Ringers to choose from (10 ring tones and 10 musical tunes), with Volume Adjustments for both ringers and earpiece. You can also choose a different ring for incoming calls from any of your stored numbers (Caller ID service required, of course). Battery Life is rated at 7 days on standby and 5 hours talk time - which I haven't personally put to the test yet, but it's certainly an improvement over previous cordless phones. Text Menus on the system, as well as Voice Prompts on the answering machine, can be set to do their thing in English, Spanish, or French - per the North American NAFTA standard.
In summary, the Uniden TRU 9480 series is a full-featured Cordless Phone System - which works GREAT in my experience, and will likely serve you well too.
