Buying a diamond can be a really confusing time. How do I find the perfect diamond at the perfect price? Why is one diamond so much more than another that seems to be the same? How do I figure this out?! Well, The Integrity Jewelers is here to help. This guide should help anyone understand how to answer these questions and be better able to make the right decisions when it comes to buying a diamond. If you're going to buy a diamond and make an intelligent and savvy purchase, you must understand the 4Cs of diamond value. Its the only way to make sure that you get what you want in a diamond and not overpay. So, what are these all-important 4Cs? They are cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Each of these will differ from diamond to diamond. Sometimes they will differ only slightly resulting in two diamonds that are priced virtually the same, and sometimes they will differ drastically resulting in huge price variations. What follows here is an explanation of why clarity is so important. (Please see our other guides for why cut, color, and carat weight are important.)
CLARITY - Clarity pertains to the natural internal imperfections of a diamond. All diamond except for flawless have these inclusions or birthmarks, which come in many forms. Inclusions can be white points (crystals), dark dots (carbon), or feather-like formations (feathers). The fewer the inclusions, the more the diamond is worth. The diamond's clarity grade quantifies these inclusions by their number, size, type, and location. Diamonds that are classified as an SI2 and above should be flawless to the naked eye (with the exception of emerald and asscher cuts). Flawless (FL) and internally flawless (IF) diamonds are free from all internal inclusions. Very Very slight inclusions (VVS1 & VVS2) are inclusions so minute that they are extremely difficult even for experienced graders to see under magnification. Very slight inclusions (VS1 & VS2) are difficult to find under magnification, requiring some effort to locate. Slight imperfections (SI1 & SI2) are minor enough that they are not seen with the naked eye, but are relatively easy to find under magnification. I1 diamonds have inclusions that may or may not be seen with the naked eye, it depends on the inclusions and the cut of the diamond. Diamonds graded as I2 and below have inclusions that are obvious to the naked eye and may affect the diamond's brilliance and wearability.
A note about clarity: (See our guide and store page on the GIA) The accuracy of diamond grading depends on the skill and competency level of the grader, as well as how liberal or conservative he/she tends to be. If someone really wants to sell their diamond, they might "fudge" the grading to sell it faster or get more money. At The Integrity Jewelers, we are incredibly conservative in our grading. If anything, we err in the consumer's favor. This ensures that you are receiving the best value for your money.
