It was very surprising to learn that prior to the 1970's, most dinnerware and pottery used in the U.S. was made in the Central Ohio Valley or Southern California. Today, nearly all is imported. This is why we became part of a growing number of people interested in "Vintage USA" made dinnerware and pottery. We have recently observed some high prices on dinnerware, and art pottery pieces made in the 1960s & 70s. Some of the more popular Ohio Valley Pottery companies were Hull, Shawnee, and McCoy, were very productive before they all closed there doors. Collectors can still find many nice examples of their work. Some of the makers of dinnerware in that region were Taylor, Smith & Taylor , Royal China, Universal and W. S. George. In California, five manufacturers are considered the most collectible; Baur Pottery, Gladding & McBean(Franciscan), Metlox, Vernon Kilns and Pacific Clay. There are only a few Ameican companies still in operation, but the industry overall has faded. We hope this short primer will encourage others to seek out more information as they collect the best of America's past.
